RFID & IoT
IoT (Internet Of Things) is spreading rapidly throughout the world. Drivers no longer have to draw a ticket to pay tolls because “hi-pass” has been applied to highway toll gates. Bus fare and tokens have long been replaced by digital transportation cards. Smart home services, like smart machines or cars controlling the room temperature before arriving at home, are making the user’s life more efficient. One of the most important things in the IoT world is ‘Sensing’ because the machine must collect information, process, and execute through the sensor. This post will touch on RFID, a hot issue ‘Sensing’ in the 21st Century. Of course, RFID is already in wide use today, but the author predicts that RFID will be used on many fronts as IoT spreads further throughout the world.
2. RFID Principle

RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) is technology that can recognize information from a distance using electromagnetic waves.

A RFID system consists of a RFID tag that combines a semiconductor chip with antenna, a RFID reader that’s connected to the antenna to communicate with the tag, and a host that processes data and controls the system.
RFID system operates the following way.
① Enter the appropriate information on RFID tag and attach to the target.
② Using the antenna, transmit a radio signal from the attached reader such as a gate, cash register, or toll gate to the RFID tag.
③ Tag responds to the signal and transmits stored data.
④ The antenna converts received data into a digital signal and transmits it to the reader.
⑤ The reader decodes the data and sends it to the host computer.

– Implemenation of RFID device
This project introduces how to design a user access control system (with LCD display), which is little different than the other one at an operational level. The display will show the relevant user name when you punch the RFID card if user validation is successful. Otherwise it will show “Unknown” on the LCD and turn ON red LED connected to Arduino. User validation is completely handled at the GadgetKeeper server side in real time. (Once you punch the card to the unit, it reads the tag ID and sends it to the GadgetKeeper. It will then compare the tag ID with the user list at GadgetKeeper and return the user name if matched). Because of that reason, Arduino needs less processing power and Uno is the better choice. User and tag list is not downloaded to Arduino in this design, hence the unit must be connected to the Internet to complete the tag validation process.
The figure below shows the implementation of the system using RFID – utilizing Ethernet Shield, Network router, Arduino Server, and central computer to create a door lock environment .

Unlike in the early 2000’s when we carried lots of bus tickets in our wallet, today we conveniently use digital bus transportation cards using RFID.
Instead of having to take out the wallet and credit card in it, you can now pay with your smartphone with built-in RFID.
